"Felted Knitting Bag"

Friday, June 09, 2006

What I love about this bag is the different textures in the felted areas - stockinette stitch areas felted creating as if vague vertical ribs when the garter stitch - horizontal ones. It's a good size for a pair of needles and some knitted piece of garment, so I'm calling this the Felted Knitting Bag! ^^

Here is the pattern:

What you need:
- 4 skeins of wool in red, 0,5 skein of wool in orange, 1 skein of wool in yellow (50 m/50 g skein)
- needles 8mm circular, 7 mm straight (for the handles)
- tapestry needle or crochet hook

CO 76 st in red colour on 8 mm circulars. Place marker, join and start:
Work the first skein in stockinette stitch.
Switch to orange colour - work in garter stitch till the end of a skein.
Switch to red colour - work in stockinette till the end of a skein. Decrease 8 st equally around in the last red row.
Switch to yellow colour - work in garter stitch till the ned of a skein. Decrease 8 st equally around in the last yellow row.
Switch to red colour - work in stockinette stitch for 8 cm, then finish with three rows of 2x2 rib (it won't be visible in the final felted result, but it'll help the top part of the bag to stay more or less the same size as before felting).
BO.
Sew the bottom flat with red yarn.

Handle:
With 7 mm straight needles, pick up 11 st on the side of a bag.
Follow the pattern:
R1: k3, k5, k3
R2: k3, p5, k3
Repeat those two rows for 62 cm.
Attach the handle on the other side of the bag with red yarn using tapestry needle of a crochet hook.

The unfelted beg has the following measurements:

Felt the bag in 60 degrees.

Felted bag has the following measurements:

Felted flower (optional)

CO 6 st.
R1: sl 1, k
R2: sl 1, p
R3: sl 1, *k 1, yo*
R4: sl 1, p

Now work 10 rows ( R5 to R14) in stockinette stitch, starting with knit row.

Decrease:
R15: sl 1, k2 tog, k 4, k2 tog, k1
R16: sl 1, p2 tog, p 2, p2 tog, p1
R17: sl 1, k2 tog, k2 tog, k1
R18: k3 tog

Knit 5 of the petals. Stitch the petals together and felt the flower. Then, after it's dry, decorate it with beads and sew it on the bag.
I also added some felted three-colour cord.

"Felted Bowling Bag"

Here is my first knitted-and-felted bag - Felted Bowling Bag.

I looked like this before felting:

I wasn't sure about using two circular needles, so I did it the following way: I knitted first side with straight needles (three triangles), then I switched to one circular needle for the connecting band, then I knitted the first orange triangle using one straight needle and the circular (the other end of the circular just keeps the rest of the stitches), now I will begin the second triangle (yellow) and I'll knit this with two straight needles, and the last triangle will be knitted again with one straight and the other end of the circular.
(I hope I made myself clear ^^).

I also got holes and yellow lines on WS while connecting two triangles, but as I read girls' posts on Bag Me KAL it should felt nicely.

As far as picking up stitches for the connecting band, I helped myself with a crocheting hook, picking one stitch at a time with a contrasting yarn (colour B - yellow in my case) and placing it on the needle, removing the hook, picking up another stitch, an so on. As if I was crocheting the chain.

My overall view on the pattern:After the initial confusion, ("cast on 39 st" - obvious, but then "R1: k3, turn" - what do you mean 'turn'?... what about the rest of the stitches?...), I grasped the idea rather quickly and I really like this funny way of knitting.

The sizes changes:

Okay, so my first words after I took my bag out from the washing machine were:
"OMG, it got sooooo tiny!... "

Of course, it didn't get soooo tiny, It just shrunk, which is normal. ^^

Now I know that if I wanted to have the felteg bag of the previous size, I would have to knit an enormous one, wow! It has a funny texture, like it had a very very short perm, just like this animal I don't remember the name, but women sometimes wear fur coats made of their furs - it's got very short curly hair (it's the result of the garter stitch, stockinette would have felted differently).

And here is the finnished bag:

I changed the idea of the handles - I decided to make a cord using a very simple circular tool (used even in the medieval times! ^^), which resulted in a three-coloured twisted cord that I put through the holes in the sides of the bag and sewn together with red yarn. (If anyone's interested in the cord making, here is the tutorial). I also knitted and felted the flower which I sewn on the front bottom of the bag, and I also embelished it with some glass beads.

"Pilgrim's Bag"

"Pilgrim's Bag" is based on a pattern of a XIII-th c. bag carried by pilgrims to the Holy Land. I am a member of the historical reenactement society and we recreate two eras: X-XII c. Scandinavia and Russia and XIII c. Poland, and I sewn this bag for my XIII c costume. It's made by hand, out of off-white cotton and maroon linnen, embroidery on the handle done with cotton floss, tassels are linnen. First picture shows you my whole XIII c. outfit (blue wool dress with cotton underlining and embroidered linnen bands, all sewn and embroidered by hand) with unfinished bag (no embroidery on the handle). Later I finished it! ^^

"Provancal Dream"

This is the first bag I have a photo of, it's been made about two years ago.

"Provancal Dream" - this one was made to accompany the skirt I've made of the beautiful Provancal cotton (second-hand shop treasure! ^^) . You can see the inside of the bag - there is a pocket there. I found the pattern somewhere on the Web.
I still haven't finished it though... can you see the safety pins keeping the handle and the bag together?... Shame on me! I'll finish this bag some time soon! ^^

[Pattern soon]

The bag is made of black heavy cotton (inside and outside), lined with thick quilted fabric so it feels like a soft cushion! ^^ The handles, the inside pocket and the flower on the front are from patterned cotton.

It still needs a closure, and the handle needs to be attached to the body of the bag.

Beginning

Hello, everyone!
You probably know me from my knitting and other crafts blog called Friendsheep.
This blog will serve the purpose of keeping my bag tutorials, the pictures of various bags I make (and I make lots of bags! ^^), all the technical details of them.
This is for you to get the patterns for different bags (if you like them and want to copy them), also for me to keep the history of my bags, to see how my creativity evolves, what patterns I had in mind in the past and how I put them into practice.

Enjoy! *^-^*
